A tornado that struck Phelps Monday evening has been confirmed as an EF-2 by the National Weather Service, with wind speeds reaching 115 miles per hour.
The twister touched down at 6:27 p.m. and remained on the ground for approximately 10 minutes, traveling a path of 1.7 miles. It reached a maximum width of 300 yards before lifting at 6:37 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service’s preliminary damage survey, the storm caused no injuries or deaths. The tornado tracked across farmland and rural areas between Melvin Hill and Fort Hill, as shown on the NWS survey map.
The Weather Service has advised the public to consult its Public Notification Statement for additional information as damage assessments continue. The report was issued at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday.
Phelps family recalls terror as tornado hits home
A tornado ripped through the Clemons family home in Phelps, New York, on Monday, catching them by surprise as they worked outside and rushed to shelter their children.
According to WHAM, the twister tore off parts of the roof and hurled debris across their property. Despite the damage, the family was unharmed and expressed deep gratitude for first responders and local Mennonites who helped with cleanup.
The Clemons said the storm’s power felt surreal, but they’re thankful no lives were lost and are focusing on recovery.
Tornado tears through Phelps; NWS to confirm Tuesday (photos & video)
A powerful storm likely spawned a tornado in Phelps Monday evening, tearing roofs from homes and uprooting trees. Now the National Weather Service will be tasked with confirming it.
Residents described intense winds, sudden darkness, and debris flying through the air on July 7. Photos and video appear to confirm a tornado was, in fact, on the ground.
The National Weather Service has not yet confirmed whether a tornado occurred but said it is actively reviewing radar data and on-the-ground damage reports from the area.
The storm caused significant damage along Lester Road and surrounding areas in the town of Phelps. Trees were snapped, power lines downed, and some structures sustained roof and siding damage.
Emergency crews responded quickly to clear debris and check on residents.
Despite the destruction, no injuries have been reported.
The National Weather Service has dispatched a survey team to inspect the affected locations and determine whether the damage was consistent with a tornado or strong straight-line winds. A final determination could be announced as soon as Tuesday.
