Mets place Starling Marte on injured list, activate Jesse Winker

The New York Mets made a few roster moves ahead of their series opener against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night.

New York placed outfielder Starling Marte on the 10-day injured list with a right knee bruise, the same knee that sidelined him for two months last season. Marte, 36, had been thriving as the team’s designated hitter, logging three straight multi-hit games before suffering the injury in Sunday’s series finale against the Yankees.

To fill his spot, the Mets activated Jesse Winker, who had been out since early May with a right oblique strain. Winker is expected to take over most DH duties. Before his injury, he was hitting .239 with a .321 on-base percentage, one home run, and 10 RBI in 24 games.

In corresponding moves, New York designated reliever Zach Pop for assignment and moved pitcher Tylor Megill to the 60-day injured list. These moves cleared space on the 40-man roster for Winker and reliever Alex Carrillo, who was promoted from Triple-A Syracuse.
