A trailer loaded with hay bales caught fire Sunday afternoon in Summerhill causing significant damage and drawing multiple fire departments, according to first responders.
The pickup pulling the trailer ignited on Champlin Road around 12:35 p.m. Crews from Locke, Sempronius, Groton, Moravia, and Genoa battled the flames for nearly an hour, using an excavator to pull smoldering hay from the trailer. The fire was traced to heat from a tire rubbing against the trailer deck.
While the truck sustained minor damage, the trailer was heavily burned. No injuries were reported, though firefighters worked in extreme heat and were supplied with water on-site.
