Zoo staff use crane to rescue fallen elephant

An urgent rescue operation at Seneca Park Zoo saved the life of one of its most iconic residents after an African elephant was knocked over on Wednesday.

Genny C., a 47-year-old elephant and longtime member of the zoo’s herd, was pushed over by another elephant while at a feeding station on the afternoon of June 25. Due to her age and size, she was unable to get back up on her own.

Zoo staff responded immediately. Using a crane and a coordinated plan, they successfully lifted Genny C. back to her feet. “I’m incredibly proud of the dedicated animal care and animal health teams at the Seneca Park Zoo—led by Zoo Superintendent Bob Lee—whose quick thinking, expert care, and heroic actions literally saved the life of our beloved elephant, Genny C,” said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello.

Genny C. is now stable and recovering under close observation. “Thanks to that bond, Genny C. responded calmly and confidently, seeking out her caregivers as soon as she was back on her feet to participate in her own follow-up care,” said Lee.

Genny C. has lived at the Seneca Park Zoo since 1979 and is one of the oldest African elephants in conservation care. The zoo said her recovery is ongoing and staff remain focused on her comfort and well-being.
