The New York Mets (47-34) closed their four-game set against the Atlanta Braves (37-43) on a high note Thursday night, securing a 4-0 win at Citi Field to earn a series split and reclaim first place in the National League East.
New York’s offense started slowly against Atlanta’s Grant Holmes but broke through in the fourth when Tyrone Taylor lifted a sacrifice fly to right to open the scoring. An inning later, Pete Alonso lined a clutch two-out RBI single, one of three hits for the All-Star finalist. Jeff McNeil added insurance in the seventh with a two-run single to shallow center, finishing a productive series in which he collected four hits.
The pitching staff was the story of the night. Griffin Canning retired the first six batters but departed early with a non-contact ankle injury after an awkward landing off the mound. Austin Warren entered in emergency relief and delivered 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out two. From there, the bullpen dominated: Dedniel Núñez retired all six hitters he faced, including striking out the side in the seventh, Ryne Stanek tossed his third straight clean frame, and Edwin Díaz closed it out in the ninth. In total, Mets relievers allowed just two baserunners over 6.1 shutout innings.
Brett Baty reached base twice and Ronny Mauricio added another hit.
The Mets now head to Pittsburgh for a three-game series against the Pirates. David Peterson (5-2, 2.98 ERA) will start Friday’s opener at 6:40 p.m.
