The New York Yankees leaned on their ace Wednesday night, and Max Fried delivered.
The left-hander spun seven dominant innings to lead New York (46-34) to a 7-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds (42-39), preventing a series sweep and earning his league-best 10th win of the season.
Fried (10-2, 1.92 ERA) was in command throughout, allowing just four hits and no earned runs while striking out seven. The only blemish on his line came via an unearned run in the fourth, after a two-out throwing error by Jazz Chisholm Jr. allowed Spencer Steer to score.
The Yankees’ offense backed Fried with 13 hits, led by Trent Grisham’s season-best four-hit night. He doubled to open the game and added an RBI single in the second to start the scoring. Grisham is now batting .251 with 15 homers and 32 RBI on the year.
Bills' Greg Rousseau named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after clutch overtime block Chisholm made up for his error with a two-run blast in the third, his 11th home run, giving New York a 3-0 lead it would never relinquish. Anthony Volpe delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Aaron Judge added an RBI double in the sixth and Giancarlo Stanton chipped in an RBI groundout. Austin Wells capped the scoring with a run-scoring single. Jasson Domínguez collected a career-high four hits.
The Yankees get the day off Thursday before opening a three-game set against the Athletics on Friday night in the Bronx. Will Warren (4-4, 4.66 ERA) is set to start the series opener at Yankee Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
