Wayne County man charged after stabbing hiker on Perinton trail

A Wayne County man is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly stabbing a stranger on a hiking trail in Perinton, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The random attack occurred Monday morning at Indian Hill, a wooded area popular with local hikers.

Authorities say Derrick Van Epps, 30, of Palmyra, ambushed the victim without warning, stabbing him multiple times with a hunting knife. The victim survived and was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Van Epps was arrested shortly after at nearby Egypt Park. He was arraigned and remains in jail on $50,000 bail. Deputies confirmed there are no other suspects involved in the incident.
