Supporters, led by groups like Compassion & Choices, credit the bill’s passage to a decade of personal storytelling and grassroots advocacy. Despite strong opposition—primarily from Republicans and Catholic groups—advocates argue it offers a dignified choice for the terminally ill.

Hochul, a Catholic, has not signaled her position. Advocates hope she will prioritize the stories of those suffering and heed polls showing majority public support. Opponents urge her to consider her legacy, warning the bill could set a dangerous precedent.
