Efforts to remove the invasive plant hydrilla from Cayuga Lake are set to ramp up this week, according to The Citizen. A delayed herbicide application will target the lake’s southern shore near Aurora.
The Cayuga County Health Department, working with federal and state agencies, plans ten rounds of fluridone treatment through August. Officials say the treated water will remain safe for most activities but shouldn’t be used on sensitive crops or nursery plants. A copper-based follow-up treatment may also occur in August.
Public drinking water will be monitored during the process, with updates posted online. Signs will be placed at access points around the treatment zones to alert lake users during each application.
