The New York Mets couldn’t replicate their offensive fireworks from Saturday, falling to the Philadelphia Phillies 7-1 on Sunday night at Citizens Bank Park, dropping two of three in the series.
After three clean innings, David Peterson ran into major trouble in the fourth. A leadoff homer by Kyle Schwarber ended a scoreless tie, and the inning quickly unraveled from there. Peterson allowed two more hits and a walk before surrendering a crushing three-run home run to Edmundo Sosa, giving Philadelphia a 5-0 lead. The left-hander was pulled after the inning, allowing a season-high five earned runs on six hits and three walks.
The Mets had a chance to strike first in the opening frame after Francisco Lindor singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Juan Soto flew out and Pete Alonso struck out, foreshadowing another quiet night with runners in scoring position. New York went 0-for-3 in those spots and managed just four hits on the night.
Lindor’s solo homer in the eighth provided the lone highlight for New York’s offense. It marked the first time in 29 games that the Mets lost when Lindor went deep.
Phillies left-hander Jesus Luzardo dominated once again, continuing his mastery of the Mets with 6.2 scoreless innings, seven strikeouts, and just four baserunners allowed. The lefty improved to 5-2 all-time against New York.
Newcomer Tyler Zuber gave up two runs in his season debut, while Dedniel Nuñez tossed a scoreless sixth in his return from the injured list.
The Mets head back to Citi Field Monday night to open a four-game set against the division-rival Atlanta Braves.
