Cornell research crippled by Pentagon cuts

Cornell University is reeling after receiving over 140 stop-work orders from federal agencies, slashing hundreds of millions in research funding, according to the Ithaca Journal. The cuts stem from a $5.1 billion Defense Department rollback targeting what it calls “wasteful contracts.”

Projects in cybersecurity, space logistics, and health sciences are now stalled. A promising tick-borne illness test led by Laura Goodman was halted near completion, while Mason Peck’s space systems research faces collapse without matching funds. Martha Fields’ study on combat stress and nutrient support has also ground to a halt, leaving key data unanalyzed and student researchers in limbo.

Faculty warn the cuts jeopardize national innovation, threaten local economic growth, and risk long-term scientific setbacks.
