The New York Yankees delivered one of their most complete performances of the season Saturday afternoon, blanking the Baltimore Orioles 9-0 behind a barrage of home runs and a dominant outing from Clarke Schmidt.
Schmidt flirted with history, tossing seven no-hit innings while striking out five and walking two in a career-high 103-pitch performance. The right-hander kept Baltimore off balance all afternoon, retiring 21 of the 24 batters he faced in what was easily his most impressive start of the year.
The offense gave him plenty of support. New York launched four solo home runs, part of a 12-hit attack that chased Baltimore’s bullpen into desperation. Trent Grisham (15), J.C. Escarra (2), Ben Rice (13), and Anthony Volpe (9) all went deep.
With a 9-0 lead heading into the eighth, manager Aaron Boone gave Schmidt a well-earned exit and handed the ball to JT Brubaker, making his first MLB appearance since 2022. The righty gave up a single to his first batter, Gary Sánchez, ending the no-hit bid. Still, Brubaker finished the job with two scoreless innings to lock in the Yankees’ eighth shutout of the season.
Volpe, who entered the game in an 0-for-24 slump, finished the day 3-for-4, while Escarra recorded a career-high three RBI.
The Yankees (44-32) look to take two of three from the Orioles on Sunday when they hand the ball to Will Warren. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:35 a.m.
