Lawmakers frustrated as budget delays stall big-ticket bills

New York’s six-month legislative session ended in frustration, with delays, power struggles, and missed chances defining the final stretch, according to Spectrum News 1. Despite initial goals to tackle affordability and public needs, lawmakers faced obstacles including late budget approvals and infighting over gubernatorial power.

Deputy Senate Majority Leader Mike Gianaris said progress was made on issues like child care and school meals, but GOP critics argued little was done for public safety or real cost relief. Tensions flared over Gov. Kathy Hochul’s influence, prompting talk of future reforms to limit executive control during budget negotiations.

While the Senate passed a record number of bills, the Assembly lagged behind, stalling measures like the antitrust overhaul and a major recycling initiative. Lawmakers blamed miscommunication and external pressures, with some calling for more in-person collaboration.
