The New York Mets’ struggles continued Friday night in Philadelphia, falling 10-2 to the Phillies as their losing streak stretched to seven games.
What began as a promising outing for rookie Blade Tidwell quickly unraveled after his departure, with the bullpen surrendering another crooked inning that put the game out of reach.
Tidwell, making just his second career start, kept the Phillies off the board for three innings, allowing only two hits and striking out three. But after a shaky fourth that included two singles and a walk, the Mets couldn’t turn a potential double play, allowing the game’s first run to score.
The Mets tied the game in the sixth with back-to-back solo homers from Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil off former teammate Taijuan Walker, but the momentum did not last long.
Reed Garrett, one of New York’s most reliable arms, was tagged for four runs in the seventh without recording an out, ballooning his ERA from 1.23 to 2.45. Justin Garza couldn’t stop the bleeding, giving up two more in the frame and a two-run home run to Nick Castellanos in the eighth.
Offensively, the Mets managed just seven hits and continued to struggle with runners in scoring position. Francisco Lindor’s slump deepened with an 0-for-4 night, extending his hitless streak to 18 at-bats.
The Mets (45-31) will look to stop the bleeding Saturday night in Game 2 of the series when Griffin Canning takes the mound for New York against Phillies righty Mick Abel. The first pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m.
