The New York Mets’ slide continued Thursday night in Atlanta, falling 7-1 to the Braves and extending their losing streak to a season-high six games.
BILLS GAME WEEK: Buffalo heads to Los Angeles for Monday Night Football matchup with Rams (preview) New York grabbed an early lead in the second inning when Tyrone Taylor singled and stole second, setting up Ronny Mauricio’s two-out RBI single up the middle. But the bats were mostly quiet the rest of the night, as the Mets finished just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left six on base.
Clay Holmes started strong with three scoreless innings but unraveled as control issues mounted. The right-hander issued six walks, including a bases-loaded free pass to Drake Baldwin that gave Atlanta a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Holmes threw a career-high 104 pitches over 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out five.
Huascar Brazobán replaced Holmes and immediately walked in another run. In the sixth, he loaded the bases again and surrendered a back-breaking three-run double to Matt Olson, ballooning the deficit to 6-1. Brazobán recorded just two outs and was charged with four earned runs.
Justin Hagenman made his MLB debut in relief and was a bright spot, tossing 2.2 innings with only one run allowed while saving the bullpen from further damage.
Juan Soto collected his 1,000th career hit in the loss, while Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo each added hits, but the Mets offense never found its rhythm against Braves starter Spencer Strider.
The Mets (45-30) head to Philadelphia on Friday night to open a three-game set with the Phillies (45-30). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
