Authorities arrested a Cayuga County woman this week after uncovering evidence of public assistance fraud involving unreported income.
Sasha Binns, 47, was taken into custody on June 18 after a joint investigation revealed she failed to report income, leading to an overissuance of public benefits. Investigators charged her with Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, Welfare Fraud in the Fourth Degree, and Misuse of Food Stamps—each classified as an E felony.
According to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation was a coordinated effort between the Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Social Services Case Integrity Unit, and the District Attorney’s Office. Authorities secured an arrest warrant through Auburn City Court, where Binns was later arraigned.
At arraignment, the court remanded Binns to the custody of the Sheriff’s Office, where she remains incarcerated.
“Welfare Fraud is a crime and members of the Sheriff’s Office will continue to partner with the District Attorney’s Office and Department of Social Services to investigate, arrest and prosecute offenders within Cayuga County,” the statement read.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with additional information about the case to contact them at 315-253-1222 or submit tips anonymously through the SaferWatch app.
