The New York Yankees finally broke out of their scoring drought, but a late defensive miscue proved costly in a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, extending their losing streak to six games.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. ended the club’s scoreless streak at 30.1 innings with a solo shot in the second, and Cody Bellinger followed with a go-ahead homer in the fourth. It was the Yankees’ first lead in 51 innings. But despite those bright spots, the offense managed just three hits on the night.
Ryan Yarbrough gave the Yankees a fighting chance, allowing just two runs on a pair of solo home runs across 5.1 innings while striking out eight. The lefty was efficient and kept the game within reach before handing things over to the bullpen.
The decisive blow came in the eighth after Fernando Cruz walked the bases loaded. Reliever Tim Hill induced a sharp grounder to Anthony Volpe, but the shortstop’s throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to score.
New York had chances late. In the eighth, Jasson Domínguez and Austin Wells reached to bring Aaron Judge to the plate as the potential go-ahead run, but the heart of the lineup couldn’t capitalize. In the ninth, Paul Goldschmidt reached on an error, but the Yankees again came up empty.
Now 42-31, New York will look to salvage the series finale Thursday afternoon behind Carlos Rodón, who faces Angels lefty Tyler Anderson. The first pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. in the Bronx.
