As outdoor activities ramp up, it’s crucial to stay vigilant against ticks. These tiny arachnids, not insects, can transmit diseases like Lyme disease and are often found in grassy or wooded areas.
Ticks must come into direct contact with a host to bite, making areas like trails, shrubs, and leaf litter common risk zones. Preventive steps include wearing light-colored, tucked-in clothing, using insect repellents, and checking for ticks frequently on yourself, children, and pets.
Additional tips include applying insecticides around yards, drying clothes on high heat after outdoor activity, and wearing rubber boots. More information is available through Cornell Cooperative Extension Oneida County’s “Tick Talk” resources.
