New York State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal is pushing back against a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration that challenges the state’s “Protect Our Courts Act,” according to Spectrum News. The law, passed in 2020, prevents federal immigration agents from making arrests in or near state courthouses.
Hoylman-Sigal, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Attorney General Letitia James will vigorously defend the law, calling the federal complaint baseless. He emphasized that state courts are under state control and should remain accessible to all residents, regardless of immigration status.
Critics argue the law hinders federal enforcement, but Hoylman-Sigal insists it protects the legal process by encouraging undocumented individuals to appear in court without fear.
