The New York Mets saw a much-needed win slip through their fingers Tuesday night in Atlanta, surrendering a three-run lead in the eighth and ultimately falling 5-4 in 10 innings to the Braves. The defeat marks New York’s fourth straight loss.
David Peterson was sharp early, working seven efficient innings with a heavy dose of ground balls and allowing just one run through the first seven frames. But after issuing a walk and giving up a single to open the eighth, he was lifted, and the bullpen couldn’t hold the line. Reed Garrett gave up a bases-clearing double to Marcell Ozuna, tying the game at four and leaving Peterson with a no-decision despite a quality start.
The Mets jumped out early behind a 412-foot solo home run from Juan Soto and a two-run bloop double by Tyrone Taylor in the second. Taylor added another run with a solo shot in the fifth, giving the Mets a 4-1 cushion. But despite making solid contact throughout the night, New York ran into poor luck and poor base running, including two rally-killing double plays involving Soto.
After a scoreless ninth from Edwin Díaz, the Mets couldn’t cash in with the automatic runner in the 10th. In the bottom half, defensive miscues and a sacrifice fly from Austin Riley handed Atlanta the walk-off win.
The Mets (45-28) will try to snap the skid on Wednesday night as they send Paul Blackburn to the mound for Game 2 of the series. The first pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
