The New York Mets (45-27) wrapped up a disappointing weekend with a 9-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays (39-32) on Sunday afternoon, suffering their first sweep of the 2025 season.
New York’s offense was held in check for a third straight game, while right-hander Griffin Canning endured another rough outing on the mound.
Canning allowed six runs on four hits and three walks across just 4.1 innings, continuing a troubling stretch in June. Aside from a standout start against the Dodgers on June 4, the righty has struggled in four of his last five outings. Over his past two starts, Canning has now given up 10 earned runs in 9.2 innings, raising concerns for a Mets rotation already missing Kodai Senga.
The Mets managed only five hits on the day, two of which came from Luisangel Acuña. Ronny Mauricio added a pinch-hit single in the seventh but was stranded as the heart of the order went down in order. New York was unable to solve Rays starter Shane Baz, who threw 6.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts despite issuing four walks.
The Mets get the day off Monday before opening a three-game series with the Braves on Tuesday night in Atlanta.
