Carlos Rodón was tagged early, surrendering a run in the first after a tough infield single and a throwing error by Anthony Volpe allowed Boston to take a quick 1-0 lead. Rodón kept things close until the fourth when the Red Sox capitalized on back-to-back doubles. They tacked on two more runs in the fifth and sixth, with Rodón finishing the night charged with four runs (three earned) across five-plus innings.

The Yankees offense was quiet early, stifled by Boston rookie Hunter Dobbins, who spun six scoreless innings with five strikeouts. But New York finally broke through in the seventh after back-to-back walks led to RBI singles from Jasson Domínguez and Austin Wells. The inning ended prematurely, however, when Domínguez was picked off and caught stealing third with two outs.

Down 4-2 entering the ninth, Paul Goldschmidt opened the frame with a double and later scored on a pair of groundouts. Domínguez doubled to put the tying run in scoring position, but Wells’ deep fly to center fell just short of the warning track, ending the game.

The top of the Yankees lineup struggled again, with Grisham, Judge, and Rice combining to go 0-for-12 with six strikeouts.

Box Score

The Yankees will look to avoid being swept for the first time this season on Sunday afternoon. Max Fried gets the ball opposite Boston’s Brayan Bello, with first pitch set for 1:35 p.m.
