NY Senate backs insurance coverage for egg freezing

New York’s Senate has passed a bill that would make egg freezing and storage more affordable by requiring insurance companies to cover the costs, according to WETM. The bill aims to expand reproductive options for those facing financial barriers.

Senator Michelle Hinchey, the bill’s sponsor, said many people give up on starting families due to high costs. She argues that fertility technology should be accessible regardless of income. However, the New York Health Plan Association contends current state law already provides generous coverage.

The bill still awaits approval from the Assembly before the legislative session ends on June 17.
