NY passes prison reforms after inmate’s death

New York lawmakers have approved a prison reform bill in response to the killing of Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility, according to Spectrum News. The legislation aims to boost transparency and oversight, but some advocates say it doesn’t go far enough.

The reform package includes mandatory camera coverage in prisons, faster reporting of inmate deaths, expanded investigative authority, and improved access for watchdog groups. It stops short of including controversial parole and sentencing reforms long sought by advocates.

While supporters view the bill as a meaningful step, critics argue more must be done to transform prison culture and ensure safety behind bars.
