Two charged after child rescued from Canisteo River

A 5-year-old was pulled from the Canisteo River after a tubing accident Saturday, leading to criminal charges for two adults, according to New York State Police. The child was swept into a submerged tree and rescued by a nearby kayaker.

Troopers say the group was tubing near County Route 119 when the current pulled several people into danger. Emergency crews used ropes and boats to reach a small island where the group had gathered. The child, not wearing proper flotation gear, was treated at a hospital and released.

Tessa Hamilton, 32, and Matthew Martin, 35, both of Hornell, face misdemeanor charges including child endangerment. Martin also faces contempt charges for violating a protection order.
