Asbestos found in Cayuga County building basement

Just a year after vermiculite closed the Cayuga County Office Building, officials have now confirmed asbestos contamination in the basement, according to The Citizen. The discovery affects key infrastructure, including IT systems and a backup 911 center.

Legislators were briefed Tuesday and approved up to $150,000 for environmental services. They also hired Campus Construction Management Group to oversee the building’s remediation, signaling the seriousness of the issue. The asbestos source was traced to aging fireproof insulation above basement ceiling tiles.

Chairman Jonathan Anna warned the total cleanup cost remains unknown and could exceed the $52 million renovation estimate proposed before the building’s closure. Officials are pausing for further guidance as they evaluate next steps.
