Schumer slams GOP plan slashing food aid

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is warning that millions of New Yorkers could go hungry under a Republican-backed tax bill that includes historic cuts to food assistance. The House-passed measure would slash $300 billion from SNAP, expanding work requirements and threatening access for vulnerable groups.

The proposal raises the age threshold for mandatory work or engagement hours and adds new rules for parents with children over 7. Schumer said areas like Oswego County, already struggling with food insecurity, would be hit especially hard. He called the cuts cruel, claiming they fund tax breaks for the wealthy.

Republicans argue the changes are needed to curb fraud. President Trump wants the bill passed by July 4.
