New York Baby Bonus explained: What is it? How will it work?

Thousands of New York families will receive a new round of stimulus-style relief through Governor Kathy Hochul’s $1,800 baby bonus for low-income parents.

The BABY Benefit (Birth Allowance for Beginning Year) offers a one-time payment to eligible families. It aims to help with newborn-related expenses and support families during a critical time.

Who qualifies for the $1,800 baby bonus?

To get the payment, families must meet all of the following:

  • Live in New York State
  • Receive public assistance
  • Have a baby born during the 2025–2026 fiscal year

The New York Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) will soon provide details on how to access the benefit.

What’s the purpose of the payment?

The bonus is meant to ease the cost of welcoming a new baby. Families can use it for diapers, baby food, housing, medical bills, or other essentials.

Governor Hochul said the payment will help families cover birth-related expenses and reduce financial stress during the early months of parenthood.

Other stimulus payments in the NY budget

The baby bonus is one part of a larger effort to support families. The 2025–2026 state budget also includes:

  • Expanded child tax credits: Up to $1,000 per child under 4, and $500 per child ages 4–16
  • Inflation refund checks: One-time payments of up to $400 per household this fall
  • Free school meals: All public school students will get free breakfast and lunch
  • Free community college: Tuition coverage for adults in high-demand job training programs

Officials estimate these programs will lower child poverty by more than 8% and bring relief to millions of New Yorkers.

What should families do now?

Parents who meet the requirements will get the baby bonus automatically once the program rolls out. Those expecting a child and receiving public assistance should watch for updates from OTDA or contact their local benefits office.

Governor Hochul said the new budget reflects her goal to make New York “the best, most affordable place to start and raise a family.”
