Union Springs awarded $3.3 million for park, housing and marina projects

Union Springs is set to undergo a major transformation after being selected for several Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) projects totaling more than $3.3 million. The announcement was made as part of a joint $10 million DRI award shared with Aurora and Cayuga, funded by New York State.

“These initiatives are exceptionally important to our community, and we are confident that upon their completion, their positive effects will be felt for generations to come,” said Mayor Robert Thurston Jr. “This investment will be truly transformative.”

The largest share of Union Springs’ funding—$1,338,000—will go toward comprehensive improvements at Frontenac Park. The project will enhance pedestrian pathways, stormwater infrastructure, and boat launch facilities. It will also repurpose an existing house on Factory Street into a community center and recreation office. Other upgrades include a new patio, additional parking, floating docks, a new picnic shelter, and open lawn areas for games.

Another $1,428,000 will fund the construction of a new mixed-use building at 143 Cayuga Street. The project will add apartments on upper floors and retail space on the ground level, contributing to local housing and economic development.

A third project, receiving $589,000, will create a new marina gateway and storefront entrance at 107 Cayuga Street. The development will feature a waterfront café open year-round and expanded service facilities for boaters, including a new showroom and triple bay service center.

The Village of Union Springs says it anticipates a vibrant future as these projects move forward, bringing long-term benefits for both residents and visitors.
