State-By-State: Which Governors Are Sending Their Own ‘Stimulus’ Payments?

Stimulus Payment from the United States Treasury

Although no new federal stimulus checks are scheduled for 2025, some states are launching their own one-time payments. These programs—ranging from inflation refunds to utility credits—aren’t officially labeled “stimulus,” but they offer similar financial relief. If you’re struggling with higher costs, your state may be offering direct support this year.

New York’s Inflation Refund Checks arrive this fall

New York will begin issuing one-time “inflation refund” checks in October. Over 8 million households will automatically receive between $150 and $400, depending on income and filing status. Single filers earning up to $75,000 will get $200. Those between $75,000 and $150,000 qualify for $150. Joint filers earning up to $150,000 will receive $400, while couples earning up to $300,000 will get $300. The checks do not require an application and are funded by surplus sales tax revenue. This initiative aims to reduce financial strain caused by inflation.

California: Energy and utility rebates

In California, residents are receiving relief through the Climate Credit program. Households served by PG&E, SCE, or SDG&E will see bill credits ranging from $39 to $59 applied directly to their utility bills. While these aren’t direct checks, they still help households reduce monthly costs.

New Mexico: $500 to $1,000 tax rebates

New Mexico approved income tax rebates for state residents who filed 2024 returns. Single filers will receive $500, while joint filers will receive $1,000. These payments are scheduled for late June or early July. No extra application is required, as long as tax returns are up to date.

Pennsylvania: Property tax and rent rebates

Pennsylvania’s expanded Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PTRR) program is offering up to $1,000 to eligible older people and those with disabilities. For 2025, the income limit rose to $45,000. Applications are open now and will be accepted through June 30. This program is especially helpful for fixed-income households.

Arizona: Dependent refunds for families

Arizona is also providing targeted relief for families. Taxpayers will receive $250 per child under age 17 and $100 per dependent aged 17 or older. The cap is three dependents per household. These payments are automatic for anyone who filed 2021 and 2022 state tax returns and claimed qualifying dependents.

How to check if you’re eligible

Each state has different rules, so it’s important to verify the details. Most states require a recently filed state tax return. While some programs—like those in New York and Arizona—send payments automatically, others may ask you to apply. Visit your state’s Department of Revenue website for the latest information and deadlines.

Bottom line: relief is local in 2025

Even though the federal government hasn’t approved new stimulus checks, several states are filling the gap. From energy credits to direct deposit refunds, these programs can ease the pressure of inflation. If you live in one of the participating states, don’t miss your chance to benefit. Take a few minutes to check eligibility and ensure you receive any money you’re owed.
