Luke Kornet’s coming out party for the Celtics

For a team stacked with stars like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, it was Luke Kornet who stole the spotlight on Tuesday night.

An inspired Luke Kornet helped the Celtics keep their season alive

The 7-foot-2 center delivered a career-defining performance, energizing TD Garden as the Boston Celtics dismantled the New York Knicks 112-92 to cut the Knicks series lead to 3-2 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Kornet’s Impact: Defense, Energy, and “Kornet Kontests”

Kornet’s influence was impossible to ignore. His four blocks, seven rebounds, and relentless rim protection anchored Boston’s suffocating defense. Each swat brought the Garden crowd to its feet, with Kornet’s signature “Kornet Kontests” — leaping with arms fully extended even when several feet away — becoming an unlikely highlight.

“Luke was incredible,” said head coach Joe Mazzulla. “He did all the little things that don’t always show up in the box score. His timing, effort, and energy were infectious.”

Celtics Find Their Defensive Identity

Boston’s defensive effort was overwhelming from the start. They held New York to just 38% shooting, with Kornet’s interior presence forcing the Knicks into tough, contested looks.

“I’ve been working for moments like this,” Kornet said postgame. “I just wanted to be ready when my number was called, and tonight, it was about protecting the paint and bringing energy.”

Kornet’s emergence provided a crucial boost. His ability to switch onto smaller players and contest without fouling gave Boston a defensive versatility they had lacked earlier in the series.

The White-Kornet Duo Delivers

While Kornet anchored the defense, Boston’s offensive firepower was led by Derrick White’s relentless drives. The Celtics’ ball movement was crisp, piling up 28 assists on 41 made field goals.

Boston’s ability to stretch the floor opened up lanes for White. But it was Kornet’s unexpected offensive contributions — putbacks, screen assists, and even a soft mid-range jumper — that symbolized the Celtics’ depth.

Celtics Close in on Eastern Conference Finals

With the series shifting back to New York for Game 6, Boston now has a chance to even it up and stay alive for a return to the Eastern Conference Finals.

If Kornet’s breakout performance is a sign of things to come, the Celtics may have found a new x-factor.

“Luke gave us life tonight,” said Tatum. “It’s not always going to be the stars. We’re at our best when everyone contributes, and tonight was his night.”
