Micron’s chip plant sparks major highway overhaul plan

Micron’s planned chipmaking facility in Clay, NY could bring 9,000 jobs—and severe traffic—unless sweeping road upgrades are made, according to the company’s environmental report.

To handle the surge, Micron recommends adding new exits on I-81 and Route 481, widening Routes 11 and 31 up to six lanes, and transforming the I-81/Route 31 exit into a diverging diamond interchange. A unique four-lane access road and multiple roundabouts are also proposed to ease congestion near the future campus.

Though Micron won’t fund the projects, it says these changes are vital to avoid gridlock as the facility and surrounding area grow rapidly through 2045.
