SAVE Act could complicate voter registration process

A federal voter ID bill known as the SAVE Act is drawing criticism as it heads to the Senate, with opponents warning it could make registering to vote far more difficult for many citizens, according to News 8 WROC.

The legislation would require proof of U.S. citizenship—like birth and marriage certificates—to register for federal elections. Critics, including Congressman Joe Morelle and the League of Women Voters, argue the bill could suppress votes, particularly for women who have changed their names. Supporters claim it targets non-citizen voting fraud.

A judge has already blocked parts of the act from implementation, adding legal uncertainty to an already controversial proposal.
