Auburn Community Hospital has welcomed one of the nation’s few orthopedic oncologists, significantly expanding its cancer treatment capabilities and giving local patients access to highly specialized surgical care close to home.
Dr. Emily Carmody, an expert in removing tumors from bones and soft tissues, has joined the hospital’s staff, reinforcing the Upstate Cancer Center at ACH. Nationwide, only an estimated 150 orthopedic oncologists are currently practicing.
“Orthopedic oncology is a very specialized area of orthopedics,” said Dr. Carmody. “No more traveling long distances for this type of care. Patients can receive phenomenal cancer treatment here in Auburn.”
Dr. Carmody’s surgeries focus on preserving limbs and minimizing damage to surrounding tissues. She explained, “My goal is to save as much bone and tissue as possible while completely removing tumors.”
In addition to cancer surgeries, Dr. Carmody also performs total joint revisions—replacing or repairing worn or loose prosthetic joints—offering vital support to aging patients.
Her education spans Seton Hall University, the University of Rochester, George Washington University, and the University of Florida. She earned her board certification in orthopaedic surgery in 2012 and has since received several national accolades, including awards from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, and the International Society of Limb Salvage.
“We are thrilled to have such a distinguished and specialized surgeon on board,” said ACH President and CEO Scott Berlucchi. “Patients do not have to travel far and wide for comprehensive care.”
ACH Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jamie Syrett added, “There are only a handful of orthopedic oncologists in the U.S., and one of the best is now caring for patients here.”
Dr. Carmody, also a certified Reiki Master, will offer integrative care at the Upstate Cancer Center in Auburn, serving patients throughout Cayuga County and beyond.
