Cayuga County is celebrating a milestone this spring as its Office of Tourism reaches its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of promoting the region’s heritage, attractions, and natural beauty.
Founded in 1995, the Cayuga County Office of Tourism has evolved from a one-person operation into an award-winning leader in the tourism industry. The organization has played a vital role in growing the county’s visibility, drawing visitors to its scenic lakes, cultural landmarks, and historic sites—including those connected to Harriet Tubman.
“Over the past 30 years, we’ve leaned into our role as storytellers and stewards of Cayuga County’s culture,” said Karen Kühl, Director of Tourism. “We remain committed to growing tourism in a way that supports our community’s values and future.”
The office has been lauded for its inclusive and community-centered approach. It has partnered with national groups like Travel Unity and Wheel The World to ensure accessibility and representation in tourism marketing. Local voices, including farmers, artists, and underrepresented communities, have been central to its campaigns.
Founding director Meg Vanek reflected on the agency’s origins: “Starting out with a small budget and staff of one, the organization has grown to the award-winning tourism industry leader it is today.”
The economic impact of tourism in Cayuga County has been significant. In 2024, the industry generated $157 million in revenue and contributed $18.66 million in state and local taxes. It also supported over 1,500 jobs across the region.
Looking ahead, the Office of Tourism plans to continue promoting Cayuga County as a welcoming, vibrant destination while supporting sustainable economic growth.
