New York County ranks 10th nationwide for the highest average federal tax refund, with residents receiving an average of $5,903, according to a new study by Upgraded Points.
Statewide, New Yorkers averaged $3,339 in refunds, placing the Empire State 12th nationally. Refund amounts increased with income, soaring past $17,000 for earners above $200,000. Five counties, including Westchester and Rockland, reported averages higher than the state’s overall.
While refunds rebounded to pre-pandemic highs, the number of returns dropped as temporary COVID-era tax credits expired. Nationally, Florida led the list, with an average refund of $3,852.
