Cayuga County kicks off Erie Canal bicentennial celebrations with events, exhibits, and historic voyage

As the Erie Canal marks 200 years of shaping New York’s identity and economy, Cayuga County is celebrating the milestone with a slate of commemorative events and interactive experiences throughout 2025.

Spearheaded by the Cayuga County Office of Tourism, the yearlong tribute honors the canal’s enduring legacy with an array of activities for residents and visitors. The celebration is anchored online at TourCayuga.com, where a new Erie Canal Bicentennial section offers historical content, visual galleries, and engagement opportunities.

Highlights include a Canal History Blog Series exploring the waterway’s influence on Cayuga County, a Bicentennial Photo Gallery, and a Canal Photo Contest inviting submissions from amateur and professional photographers. A downloadable Canal Bicentennial Explorer’s Guide gives visitors a curated map of historic sites and attractions along the county’s canal corridor. For collectors, an exclusive commemorative poster by David Owens Illustration is also available.

A full events calendar culminates with one of the most anticipated moments of the year—the arrival of the Seneca Chief, a full-scale replica of Governor DeWitt Clinton’s original packet boat. The vessel, built by the Buffalo Maritime Center, will retrace the 1825 grand opening journey of the Erie Canal, stopping in 28 ports along the way. The Seneca Chief will dock in Cayuga County on October 2, offering a rare glimpse of living history in motion.

Other events include the Brutus Canal Festival in Weedsport, set for June 1, which promises family-friendly entertainment and a celebration of local canal heritage.

The Cayuga County Convention & Visitors Bureau encourages everyone to explore the bicentennial offerings and stay connected through TourCayuga.com, where new events and resources are being added throughout the year.
