Auburn liquor store owner warns of wine sales impact

A proposal to allow supermarkets in New York to sell wine could threaten small liquor stores, according to Mindy VanLiew, owner of Auburn Discount Liquor. She told The Auburn Citizen that if grocery chains like Wegmans and Tops gain approval, it would be “devastating” for local shops, which rely heavily on wine sales.

VanLiew cited Colorado as an example, where liquor stores closed after similar legislation passed. She estimates half of Auburn’s liquor stores could shut down within a year. Supporters argue the bill includes incentives for supermarkets to sell New York wines, but opponents question its effectiveness.

As lawmakers debate the issue, VanLiew urges them to consider its impact on small businesses and local jobs.
