New York State Police have identified 22-year-old Messiah Nantwi as the Mid-State Correctional Facility inmate who died over the weekend. Officials say he was pronounced dead at Wynn Hospital in Utica on March 1.
Nantwi was serving a five-year sentence on a weapons charge. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death with assistance from the DOCCS Office of Special Investigations. The New York State Attorney General’s Office has also been notified.
The DOCCS Commissioner has placed 11 staff members on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
