Canandaigua firefighters were called to the city pier after an ice boat broke through the frozen lake, prompting a delicate retrieval operation.

Upon arrival, crews found several civilians attempting to recover the vessel on their own. Recognizing the potential danger, firefighters requested Crystal Beach crews to remain on standby with ice rescue equipment. Meanwhile, first responders successfully retrieved the boat and brought it safely to shore for its owners.
Officials are urging the public to avoid attempting ice rescues without proper training and equipment. “If you need assistance getting a pet, retrieving equipment, or getting a boat out of icy water, call 911,” fire officials advised. “Retrieving things from the ice without drysuits, proper equipment, and/or training can be extremely dangerous.”
With winter conditions still unpredictable, emergency responders emphasize the risks associated with frozen bodies of water. Thin or unstable ice can give way quickly, turning a routine retrieval into a life-threatening situation.
