Prison conditions worsen as NY CO strike continues

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Families and advocates are raising alarms over deteriorating conditions in New York state prisons, where inmates reportedly lack adequate food and medical care amid the ongoing correction officers’ strike.

Legal Aid Society Attorney Antony Gemmell tells local media the situation “dehumanizing” and urged an end to the illegal walkout.

Gov. Kathy Hochul deployed 3,500 National Guard members to manage prisons, but critics argue this is only a temporary fix that fails to address deeper systemic issues. With tensions rising, advocacy groups are demanding immediate action to protect incarcerated individuals as the strike drags on.
