Steuben County launches alert system to prevent deed fraud

Steuben County Clerk Judy Hunter has introduced a free Fraud Alert system to help homeowners protect their property from deed and mortgage fraud. The service notifies property owners when documents are recorded in their name, allowing them to catch fraudulent activity early.

Deed fraud occurs when scammers illegally transfer property titles or take out loans in another person’s name. By signing up for alerts, residents can monitor their property records and verify any changes at the county clerk’s office.

For more information or to enroll in the service, homeowners can visit the Steuben County government website.
