Pope Francis, recently hospitalized with lung and kidney issues, remains broadly popular among U.S. Catholics, with 78% expressing a favorable view in a February 2025 Pew Research poll. His ratings have generally exceeded those of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, though they have declined from a high of 90% in 2015.
Political divisions have widened, with 88% of Democratic-leaning Catholics viewing him favorably compared to 69% of Republicans. Many Catholics see him as a significant agent of change in the church, with 42% believing he represents a major shift.
In Latin America, Francis remains well-liked, though favorability has dropped, particularly in Argentina, where it fell from 98% in 2013 to 74% in 2024. Despite declines, he continues to be viewed as a transformative figure.
