House Democrats warn GOP Medicaid cuts could hurt millions in New York

House Democrats are sounding the alarm over potential deep Medicaid cuts as Republicans push forward with a budget plan aligned with Donald Trump’s policy goals. The House GOP passed a budget blueprint on Tuesday, laying the groundwork for tax and spending cuts, as well as increased immigration enforcement funding.

Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the proposal the “largest Medicaid cut in American history,” warning it could devastate millions, especially in New York, where 7 million residents rely on the program. Experts caution that reductions in federal Medicaid funding could destabilize state budgets, affecting other services.

New York Republicans, including Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, voted for the plan but sought assurances on protecting vulnerable populations. While GOP lawmakers argue no specific cuts are detailed yet, Democrats insist such drastic reductions would inevitably affect Medicaid recipients.
