The State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced a temporary closure of Cameron Pond in Steuben County to facilitate extensive dam maintenance and repairs. The closure will take effect on March 17, 2025, and remain in place until work is completed.
Cameron Pond, located in the town of Cameron, will be off-limits to all outdoor recreation during this period. Under DEC oversight, contractors will carry out maintenance aimed at reducing flood risks, preserving the surrounding natural habitat, and ensuring public safety. While the pond and its immediate recreational areas will be closed, other parts of Cameron State Forest will remain open for public use.
DEC officials have not provided a specific timeline for completion but stated that the pond will reopen later in the year. The agency will announce an official reopening date once the work is finished.
For those seeking alternative outdoor recreation opportunities during the closure, DEC encourages the public to visit its “Find Places to Go” resource for information on other available sites.
