A man was arrested Sunday evening after violating an order of protection, breaking into a residence, and assaulting a victim in Auburn, according to police.
At approximately 5:38 p.m. on February 23, Auburn Police responded to a fight complaint at 62 Columbus St. Investigators determined that Jacob J. VanFleet had unlawfully entered a Columbus Street home, where he was prohibited from contacting the resident under an order of protection. VanFleet allegedly forced his way into the enclosed porch by damaging the exterior door before yelling at the victim through a locked interior door.
The confrontation escalated when the victim’s father arrived at the scene. VanFleet allegedly assaulted him across the street, striking him in the back of the head. His mother, Julie VanFleet, also on scene, reportedly jumped on the victim’s back, causing him to fall. While the victim was on the ground, Jacob VanFleet allegedly kicked him in the face, injuring his left eye. He also damaged the victim’s vehicle by punching it multiple times.
When police attempted to arrest Jacob VanFleet, he resisted, and Julie VanFleet allegedly obstructed the officer by pushing him. Officers ultimately gained control of both suspects and took them into custody.
Jacob VanFleet faces multiple charges, including two counts of felony criminal contempt, criminal mischief, endangering the welfare of a child, assault, and resisting arrest. He was transported to the Cayuga County Jail pending arraignment. Julie VanFleet was charged with obstructing governmental administration and harassment and was released on an appearance ticket.
