The Syracuse women’s basketball team (10-16, 4-11 ACC) fought hard against No. 9 North Carolina (24-4, 12-3 ACC) but ultimately fell short, losing 68-58 on Thursday night at the JMA Wireless Dome.
A strong three-point shooting performance in the second half kept the Orange in contention, as they connected on 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) shots from beyond the arc. However, the comeback bid wasn’t enough to secure the victory.
Senior Georgia Woolley led Syracuse with 17 points, marking her 12th consecutive game scoring in double figures. She also contributed four rebounds and four assists. Despite her efforts, Syracuse trailed 15-12 after a tightly contested first quarter and saw North Carolina extend its lead to 11 by halftime.
The Orange showed resilience in the third quarter, with Woolley, Sophie Burrows, and Olivia Schmitt combining for six three-pointers to cut the deficit to five points. However, the Tar Heels responded and entered the final period up by 10. A 6-0 run fueled by Madeline Potts’ layup brought Syracuse within six in the fourth quarter, but North Carolina pulled away for the win.
Syracuse will look to bounce back on Sunday, February 23, as they face Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
