Ontario County inmate arrested for smuggling cocaine into jail

A Canandaigua man was arrested Monday night after authorities say he smuggled contraband into the Ontario County Jail.

Ontario County deputies charged James Murray, 34, with first-degree promoting prison contraband after an investigation determined he had introduced a small bag containing a white powdery substance into the jail facility. A field test later confirmed the substance was cocaine.

Murray, who was already in custody, was held at the jail following the arrest. Authorities did not disclose how he allegedly managed to bring the contraband into the facility or whether additional charges are being considered.

He is scheduled to appear in Hopewell Town Court at a later date to answer the charge. First-degree promoting prison contraband is a felony under New York law, carrying serious legal consequences for those convicted.
