A state audit revealed that New York’s Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) has lost track of thousands of computers and tech equipment due to poor inventory management. Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s report also found that the agency destroys new or barely used devices instead of donating or selling them.
Auditors discovered missing laptops, security lapses in stockrooms, and untrained staff managing equipment with potentially sensitive data. ITS has acknowledged the issues and pledged to improve its inventory tracking.
DiNapoli urged an operational overhaul to prevent waste and protect sensitive information.
