Steuben County opposes NYPA’s proposed hydropower rate hike

The Steuben County Legislature has formally opposed the New York Power Authority’s plan to nearly triple hydropower rates for priority customers over four years. The proposed increase would raise rates from $12.88 to $33.05 per megawatt hour, significantly impacting municipal electric systems and rural cooperatives.

Local officials warn the hike would burden governments, businesses, and taxpayers. Following public and political pressure, Governor Kathy Hochul called for the NYPA to suspend the proposal, temporarily pausing the rate increase.

The county has submitted its resolution to NYPA’s public comment period, which ends Feb. 24, 2025. Officials continue to monitor the situation, advocating for affordable energy access.
